Life is a blessing. In spite of all the pains, sufferings, anxieties and miseries, I still believe life is a pure blessing. It is an ancient thought, I know it. I personally have never taken it so seriously till I cremated my dad.
Death teaches you the most important lesson which a man can’t learn reading books. It teaches you how valuable life is. It teaches you why you should not waste your time on this God made beautiful planet. It teaches you why you should love more and hate less. It teaches you, with all the money in this world you can’t buy single second more to do the things you want to do.
I know it is very uncomfortable talking about death, but it has got an amazing lesson to teach us. Our time is limited. You are not going to get out of this life alive, that’s guaranteed. When I collected my dad’s cremains and applied it on my forehead, God had a lesson to teach me ‘This is all you leave, when you leave.’ You will die someday, but don’t live dead.

In the West, most people live their lives as if they were immortal. They refuse to talk or even think about death. Death is indeed a major taboo in Western society.
Talking and thinking about death insn't necessarily morbid. It is in fact essential! As a Westerner who has opened to other ways of thinking -call it Eastern philosophies- and whose values have changed immensely, this race for success, power, materialistic pleasures, just to name a few, that we're so eager to jump on, now appears totally vain to me. Instead of concentrating on the essential, that is the elevation of the mind for the benefit of the self and others, we spend our lifetime and all our energy on trivial details, worrying about the past and the future, living with this stupid idea that we can control all things, and forgetting that it's all here and it's now.
By accepting the fact that nothing is permanent and that death is the only certainty that exists, one ends up enjoying life fully. Of course, it is the work of a lifetime, and a pretty hard one too. But i believe that one's only real task in this world is to prepare for one's death, as well as others'. Only then, one can measure the true value of life, for life is indeed a blessing!
Very interesting post, Shiva!
I can't agree more, fred. You are right man. I certainly can't talk about westerners way of life because I don't know, in India they celebrate death because of our belief that it is only the body that has given up and not the soul. Our culture teaches us 'we are not our body.' so we actually do not give much importance to the worldly things and it works here with our ways of life. You should know better you've seen more cultures.
